Hindi Daily Builds Reliable Virtual Private Networking
Introduction
The customer has been the publishing house since 1942 of a well-known Hindi daily newspaper ranked second in India and fifth in the world by circulation. As per the 2019 Indian Readership Survey Q4, the newspaper reported a total readership of more than 68 million. Its online version had over 23 million subscribers in the same year. The publishing house is also listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India.
The enterprise needed an efficient, speedy, and secure data forwarding technology to build a reliable and private online network connecting its offices. Not happy with the networking solutions delivered by its existing service provider, the organisation decided to check Tata Tele Business Services’ (TTBS’) product portfolio.
Business Challenges
The newspaper publishers wanted to use a virtual private network (VPN) to connect their multiple offices with the Lucknow hub securely and cost-effectively. It also had to be compatible with their SD-WAN network architecture.
While these locations were previously linked using another telecom company’s connectivity services, there were issues with the setup, primarily due to:
- Usage of weak technologies and devices unable to support the highspeed transmission of data packets
- Insufficient bandwidth for the high volume of video data and the lack of reliable network uptime
- High costs of maintaining the existing cloud infrastructure provided by multiple vendors along with the inability to use public cloud services securely
Building a secure and robust VPN between the newspaper’s offices was essential to ensure they stayed connected and shared updates speedily.
Multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) was an ideal solution in this case as it could optimise band width utilisation, reduce network congestion, and boost the network performance speed.
TTBS Solution
TTBS offered Smart VPN to address the customer’s problems. The solution is MPLS-based and has been further fortified with our Secure Connect and Internet VPN services.
TTBS MPLS VPN has enabled our offices to communicate more efficiently. We can now route data speedily and can use cloud platforms more confidently on our secure and privatised network.
Here’s what went into the deployment:
- To ensure flawless service, we conducted a feasibility analysis for the customer’s 150 locations. Of these, 90 were found suitable to be connected on the MPLS network.
- Our solution architects then finalised the media required for building the network across sites. These were chosen from options such as fibre, RF – ultra-broadband radio (UBR), and transport profile (TP) media.
- Adding the Quality of Service (QoS) parameter enabled us to improve the performance of bandwidthheavy applications such as video calls. It also helped the customer prioritise traffic flows as per their needs.
Acknowledging that the publishing house expects a more reliable network following its poor experience with a major telecom service provider, we continue to maintain an uptime of 99.5% with SD-WAN enablement.
Prioritised support by our technical helpdesk is offered round-the-clock, 365 days a year. In addition, TTBS has assigned a dedicated relationship manager to handle any requests for changes and network scaling.
